A man has admitted importing cannabis to the island in the post after ordering it online on Instagram.

Alexander Harold Connor, aged 21, pleaded guilty to the production (importation) charge as well as one of possessing the drug and will be sentenced on July 13 after a probation report has been prepared.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that police were called to the Post Office sorting office on October 24 last year after a report of a suspicious package.

When opened the parcel was found to contain green vegetable matter, identified as cannabis weighing 3.6 grams and valued by police at £72.

Police went to Connor’s home in Harbour Road, Onchan, and a search there found a further small quantity of the drug.

He attended a voluntary interview at police headquarters and admitted ordering the cannabis online via Instagram.

He said that he had not realised how serious an offence it was.

Connor said that the small amount found at his home was the remains of around 3.5 grams.

Ms Carroon said that the case was suitable for summary court sentencing.

The court heard that Connor has a previous caution but no previous convictions.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500.
