A biker from the UK has been banned and fined £650 for drink-driving after falling off his bike with his wife on the back.
Colin Leonard Kent, of Hedgerley, in Buckinghamshire, admitted failing a breathalyser test with a reading of 96 - the legal limit is 35.
The 69-year-old was banned from driving for 12 months with an order to retake his test at the end of the ban.
Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court how, on August 30 at 12.25pm, police were called to an accident at Hibernia Road in Maughold.
Kent’s wife was being treated by ambulance staff and was taken to Noble’s Hospital suffering from a dislocated elbow.
Kent told police his bike had caught a ridge at the top of a driveway and they had fallen off while they were stationary.
He was said to be smelling of alcohol and failed a roadside breathalyser test.
At police headquarters Kent told police he had been coming out of the driveway where the couple were staying when his foot had slipped and the bike had toppled over.
He said that, at 11.30am he had drunk a lemsip with whisky in it as he had been suffering from a head cold.
Defence advocate Jane Gray said that her client had had a clean driving licence for 52 years.
She said that Kent was a full-time carer for his wife after she had suffered a stroke.
’Mr Kent was visiting the island marshalling at the Grand Prix,’ said the advocate.
’He was full of a head cold and was hoping to relieve the symptoms.
Catastrophic
’He made the decision to take the Lemsip and whisky. At no time did he feel it would put him over the limit.
’Unfortunately there were catastrophic consequences.
’He had only travelled a short distance, to the end of the property access road where they had been staying.
’It was a very steep uneven ridge at the junction and he was unable to hold the bike.’
Ms Gray went on to say that the combined weight of Kent, his wife and the bike was 41 stone.
’Losing his licence will place immense pressure on Mr Kent and his wife,’ said the advocate.
Magistrates also ordered Kent to pay £50 prosecution costs and gave him seven days to pay the full fine and costs.
