A pensioner whose van was involved in a collision with a bus in a drink-drive incident has been sentenced.

Keith Lawrence Fearnley, aged 72, of Westminster Terrace, Douglas, was banned from driving for two years and fined a total of £1,000.

The incident happened at Banks Circus, in Douglas, on December 10.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that police were called to Banks Circus on December 10 at 4.30pm after a report of a collision between a Vauxhall Combo and a bus.

Fearnley, who was driving the Vauxhall Combo at the time of the incident, had driven away from the scene but was later spoken to at his home by police. He was said to have been sat in his coat and hat when officers arrived and mentioned that he had drunk a pint and some whisky but no evidence of this was found at his home.

Fearnley was taken to police headquarters where he was unable to provide a sample of breath so blood was taken.

This produced a result of not less than 125 - the legal drink-drive limit is 80.

Fearnley admitted a charge of drink-driving when he appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes.

Defence advocate Emily Johnson said that Fearnley did not plan to drive again.

The advocate said that her client had been shopping before the collision but there was still some question with insurers as to the cause of the accident.

Mrs Hughes ordered Fearnley to pay £125 prosecution costs which he will pay along with the fine at a rate of £200 per month.

He was also ordered to retake his test at the end of the ban.
