A teenage drink-driver crashed his car into the kerb causing the vehicle to suffer a burst tyre.

Finn Dennis Ledwidge, of Manor Park, in Onchan, had been driving home from a party at the time of the incident.

The 19-year-old appeared in court on Tuesday, when he admitted a charge of drink-driving.

He was fined a total of £1,000 and banned from driving for two years, with an order to retake his test at the end of the ban.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court how Ledwidge was seen driving a Renault Clio on Quarterbridge Road, in Douglas, at 6.15am on January 25. The car collided with the kerb, causing a tyre to burst.

Ledwidge continued driving on to Bray Hill, where he stopped the vehicle.

A witness reported the car being parked on the pavement to police.

When officers arrived at the scene Ledwidge was sat in the rear of the car with a passenger.

He admitted driving but said the car had broken down and he was waiting for a recovery vehicle.

He failed a roadside breathalyser test with a reading of 97 - the legal limit is 35 - but told officers that he had been drinking in the car after he had driven.

However, an expert’s report concluded that Ledwidge would still have been over the limit at the time of driving.

When interviewed by police, Ledwidge said he had taken friends to a party at around 2.30am and had drunk one can of Strongbow.

Ledwidge said he had left at 4.30am, went to Douglas Head, then to McDonald’s on Peel Road, before clipping the kerb after becoming distracted by the loud music he was playing.

Defence advocate David Reynolds said that his client had previously been a man of good character with no convictions.

’He said he had not taken into account how much he had drunk,’ said the advocate.

Magistrates also ordered Ledwidge to pay £425 for the expert’s report and £125 prosecution costs.

He will pay all the amounts at a rate of £80 per month.

He must also attend a drink-driving rehabilitation course.
