A 22-year-old Ramsey man has been sentenced to community service after admitting drink driving and resisting arrest.

Harry Graham Cussell, of Auldyn Walk, failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 60 - the legal limit is 35.

He was sentenced to 50 hours’ community service for drink driving and 50 hours for resisting arrest, to run consecutively.

He was also banned from driving for two years with an order to retake his test at the end of the ban.

Defending Cussell in court his advocate Paul Glover said: ’He accepts he was over the limit. He has detailed his alcohol consumption that evening. He rather foolishly thought he wouldn’t be over the limit. He has lost his job as a carpenter due to this matter.

’He has been on the island for five weeks and was looking forward to a fresh start. He accepts the prosecution case entirely and wishes to apologise to the police officers.

’No violence was used, fortunately no-one was injured. He has learnt some very valuable lessons. He has worked since leaving school and hopes to find employment as soon as possible. He shouldn’t have reacted the way he did. It is a relatively low reading, there were no concerns about his driving.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said while passing sentence: ’You have lost your good character as a result of these offences. It will impact your future. Your behaviour was foolish in the extreme. The PC tried to speak to you. You struggled and pulled away from him and pulled him towards the quay. You failed to comply with two no entry signs.

’60 is not the highest reading but certainly significant and will have undoubtedly impaired your ability to drive.’

Cussell was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
