A drink-driver who crashed her car has been fined £1,000 and banned from driving for 12 months.

Shona Young, of Albion Terrace, Ramsey, failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 40 and was also ordered to retake her test at the end of the ban.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that police were called to an accident on New Road in Laxey at 10.55pm on July 31.

Young’s damaged red Ford Fiesta was on its side while she was being tended to by paramedics.

Police spoke to her and she said she had Covid-19 and should be in isolation.

After failing a roadside breathalyser test the 50-year-old was taken to police headquarters where she produced the reading of 40. The legal limit is 35.

She was offered a blood test, as this is the law for readings under 50, but declined.

When interviewed Young told police she had left her home after a row with her partner who she said was intoxicated.

She said she had intended to park at Laxey beach and sleep in the car.

Young said she had drunk half a bottle of wine and two cans between 4pm and 9pm, then ate chicken and chips, but had felt fit to drive.

The court heard that she has no previous convictions.

Defence advocate Louise Cooil said: ’Ms Young had taken steps to remove herself from what could have become a serious domestic situation. She had no intention to approach anyone else.’

Ms Cooil said that Young believed her isolation was ending on August 1 and that she had not been charged with anything in relation to that.

Magistrates also ordered her to pay £125 prosecution costs which she will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £100 per month.
