A drink-driver caught when has was three times the legal limit appeared in court this week.

Linus Lange Malangfe was stopped by police after he was reported by a bus driver weaving in the road as he drove from Douglas to Ballasalla.

The 47-year-old failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 105 - the legal limit is 35.

Malangfe will be sentenced on October 6 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court how Malangfe was seen driving on the A5 New Castletown Road on August 5 at 7.48am.

The bus driver reported that Malangfe had overtaken his bus in his Honda which was weaving and drifting in the road, and speeding up then slowing down.

The bus driver said he was concerned for the safety of his passengers and called 999.

Malangfe, of Queen’s Promenade, Douglas, was said to have been driving on the wrong side of the road as he approached the Blackboards.

He was located in Ronaldsway but told police he had not drunk anything since the previous evening.

After failing a roadside breathalyser test, he failed a further one at police headquarters where he produced the 105 reading.

The court heard that he has no previous convictions.

Ms Cubbon said that she was seeking a bail condition not to drive.

Defence advocate David Keates asked for a probation report to be prepared before sentencing.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said that the high reading put Malangfe outside the range of a financial penalty, bearing in mind the distance driven, high reading, and description of his driving by the witness.

Mrs Hughes ordered that the probation report consider all sentencing options, including custody.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with conditions not to drive, contact probation, reside at his home address and not leave the island without court consent.
