A drink-driver who crashed into a parked car and a fence has been fined £1,400 and banned from driving for three years.

Darren Moore, of Nursery Avenue, Onchan, failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 83. The legal limit is 35.

Deputy High Bailiff Chris Arrowsmith also ordered Moore, who is 41, to retake his test and complete a drink-driving rehabilitation course at the end of his ban.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court that a member of the public reported Moore on December 16.

He was seen driving a BMW out of Parade Street car park in Douglas.

As he left the car park he hit a fence and another vehicle, causing that car’s airbags to inflate, puncturing its tyre and ripping off its bumper.

Moore drove to Lord Street, then onto Victoria Street where he pulled over opposite the Nag’s Head pub.

He was seen rolling a cigarette as he sat in the car and was described as ’swaying’ as he sat in the driver’s seat.

Moore then got out of the car, leaving its lights on, and went into the Nag’s Head.

He emerged after a few minutes and got back into the driver’s seat of the BMW.

Police arrived at 7pm and he was said to be smelling of alcohol, slurring his words and unsteady on his feet.

Moore said to be police: ’Can I have a drink?’ though it was not clear if he meant an alcoholic one.

He was taken to police headquarters where he produced the reading of 83.

When interviewed later he gave ’no comment’ responses to questions.

A probation report said that Moore had attended a funeral earlier in the day and had been feeling upset.

The report said that he suffered issues resulting from a car accident in 2016.

Defence advocate Deborah Myerscough asked the court to take into account that her client had spent a night in custody after the incident and had been under a bail condition not to drive since December 17 which he had complied with.

Deputy High Bailiff Mr Arrowsmith also ordered Moore to pay £125 prosecution costs, which he will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £20 per week.
