A 63-year-old man from Ramsey has been fined £800 and banned from driving for a year for drink-driving.

George Alexander Williamson, of Regaby Gate, admitted the offence and was also ordered to retake his test at the end of the ban.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how, on August 17, police received information from an anonymous source that a man at the Grosvenor pub in Andreas had been drinking and was going to drive.

At 8pm police saw Williamson driving his car on Andreas Road and park at Vondy’s garage. He was said to be smelling of alcohol and was asked if he had been drinking. Williamson told police he had had two pints and he failed a roadside breathalyser test.

At police headquarters he failed a subsequent breathalyser test with a reading of between 40 and 50 - the legal limit is 35.

This entitled him to take a blood test to confirm whether he was over the limit and this produced a reading of not less than 102 - the legal limit is 80.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered Williamson to pay £125 prosecution costs.
