A 52-year-old Douglas man has admitted four offences after he gave false details to police.

Christopher Tung, of Hawarden Avenue, pleaded guilty to obstructing police, driving with no insurance, a licence offence, and having no vehicle licence.

He will be sentenced on May 3 after the preparation of a probation report.

Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court how, on January 25 at 6.20pm, police saw Tung driving a Renault Clio with a UK registration heading towards Bucks Road.

Checks revealed the car was insured by Tung in the island but registered to a different man in the UK. The car tax had also expired in October 2017.

Tung was stopped and asked for his driving documents but said that he had no ID on him. He was asked for his name and answered: ’Dickson Wan’.

He then gave his date of birth as June 23, 1978 - his real date of birth is February 16, 1966 - and his address as York Road, Douglas.

He was asked his age and said ’34’. Asked again about his date of birth this time he said that it was July 23, 1978, then changed his mind again, saying July 29, 1978.

Tung was said to appear anxious and was rubbing his face. His confusion continued as he was again asked his age and said: ’37, 34, I’m 24.’

He was arrested and taken to police headquarters where he finally gave his real details and this was verified using a fingerprinting machine.

Tung told police he didn’t have a licence so he said he had tried to give details of an associate so that he could get away. He said he bought the car two months ago but had not got around to putting it through a vehicle test to register it.

Convictions were recorded by High Bailiff John Needham who adjourned the case and granted bail.
