A 22-year-old Douglas man has been fined £300 for being drunk and disorderly.

Michael William Gerrard, of Willaston Crescent, admitted the offence and was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, on July 20 at 1.45am, police were called to Church Road Marina in Douglas after a report of a man acting suspiciously.

When officers arrived two witnesses told them that Gerrard had been annoying them and refusing to leave.

He was said to be unsteady on his feet with glazed eyes.

Gerrard swore at police and was given a warning but he then became more agitated raising his hands.

He was then said to have reached down his trousers for something and was restrained by police.

He was searched but nothing was found and he continued swearing at police telling them: ’This is pathetic, you’ve got nothing on me.’

Defence advocate Peter Taylor said: ’Nothing happened on licensed premises and there was no violence. The only nuisance was to the police and the two witnesses. He accepts his behaviour was not appropriate. He can’t recall using the words he did. He did feel aggrieved being searched. Nothing was found on him.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said while passing sentence: ’Your behaviour towards the police was totally unacceptable. You were described as being a nuisance towards two people. Had you simply left the scene you wouldn’t have been before the court today.’
