A man has been ordered to pay £500 compensation after he smashed a glass door at Cherry Orchard apartments, in Port Erin.

Killian Lamont, of Seafield Avenue, Port St Mary, admitted property damage after he kicked the fire door following a day of drinking.

The 22-year-old was ordered by High Bailiff Jayne Hughes to pay compensation and was sentenced to a conditional discharge.

A second charge of being drunk and disorderly was withdrawn.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court that on July 25 at 10.54pm, police were called to the Port Erin apartments after a witness reported seeing Lamont kick the door.

He was said to be smelling of alcohol and heavily intoxicated when police spoke to him.

Lamont was described by police as being ’belligerent’ as he demanded that they arrest him.

He was taken to police headquarters where he gave ’no comment’ responses.

Advocate Ian Kermode handed in a letter of apology from Lamont to the court as well as a reference.

Mr Kermode said: ’On the day in question it was his day off. He accepts he had been drinking heavily throughout the day, initially in Peel, before obtaining a lift to Port Erin.

’From that point his recollection becomes very hazy. He doesn’t recall leaving the pub, kicking the door or being arrested. He says he can only assume he was trying to attract attention as this was where a friend lived.’

High Bailiff Mrs Hughes sentenced him to a 12-month conditional discharge and told Lamont: ’This was inexcusable behaviour. You caused not only cost to the owner but inconvenience in having to have the door repaired.’

Lamont must also pay £125 prosecution costs.
