A man who headbutted a bouncer at the Courthouse bar in Athol Street has been fined £850.

Richard McLauchlan, of Central Drive, Onchan, admitted common assault and disorderly behaviour on licensed premises.

Magistrates also ordered the 41-year-old to pay the doorman £100 compensation.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that McLauchlan was ejected from the Courthouse bar in Douglas on November 22 at 12.35am.

He initially appeared to accept his removal but then lunged forward, butting the bouncer on the left cheek.

The incident was captured on CCTV footage.

The victim suffered reddening and swelling to his cheek.

McLauchlan was detained by security staff until police arrived and was then arrested.

When interviewed he gave ’no comment’ responses to questions.

A probation report said that McLauchlan was originally from Glasgow and had been here working as an engineer at a power station for 11 years.

He told probation that he had little recollection of the incident. He said he had been out drinking with a friend who had then left but McLauchlan had carried on drinking.

He said that he did not normally drink and had not entered licensed premises since the incident.

Defence advocate David Clegg handed in letters of reference and a letter of apology from his client.

Mr Clegg said: ’Mr McLauchlan is a man of mature character, hard working and in further education. He is studying mechanical engineering as part of his employment.

’Effectively he was a model member of society until this incident. He hasn’t touched alcohol since it happened. He was shocked he was capable of doing the act he was accused of and feels a deep sense of embarrassment.’

McLauchlan was fined £400 for the assault and £450 for disorderly behaviour.

Magistrates also ordered him to pay £50 prosecution costs, which he will pay along with the fine and compensation at a rate of £150 per month.
