Explosive specialists from the UK have been called to dispose of a ’suspicious package’ identified yesterday (Wednesday) at the Post Office headquarters.

Police were called to the Isle of Man Post Office’s sorting office at Spring Valley Industrial Estate, Douglas, at 8.45am after post office staff members found a suspicious looking package.

At the time of print, the package’s contents were unknown by police. However, a force spokesman confirmed that officers are not treating it as a ’biological or chemical’ issue and were concerned enough to bring the special unit to the Isle of Man.

When the package was discovered, it was decided that the sorting office and nearby buildings would be evacuated while it was evaluated.

The building will remain closed until the item is disposed of safely by the specialist unit, which is expected to arrive this morning.

The police spokesman said: ’We would like to reassure the public that the appropriate procedures for incidents of this nature are being followed and the safety of the employees of the Isle of Man Post Sorting Office and the general public remains our priority.’

The Post Office has apologised to customers for any inconvenience caused stating that it expects to receive airmail as normal today and aims to ’deliver the best possible service within the limitations imposed’.
