A 36-year-old man has appeared in court facing a manslaughter charge.

Stephen Ian Phillips, of Kitterland Lane, Port Erin, is also charged with failing to discharge health and safety duties as an employer.

Mr Phillips represented himself in court but will be represented by Stephen Wood going forward.

The company Stewart Clague Services Limited, based at Ballanette Park, Baldrine, are charged with two counts of breaching health and safety regulations in relation to the same incident. They were represented in court by advocate Jim Travers.

The offences are alleged to have been committed on August 4 at King William’s College when air conditioning engineer Gary Skelding, aged 56, died on a building site.

Mr Phillips and Mr Travers asked for an adjournment until September 14 with no pleas entered yet.

Mr Travers said that there was a representative of Stewart Clague Services Limited in the public gallery but someone would appear officially on behalf of the company at the next court date.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with a condition for Mr Phillips to live at his home address and not leave the island without court consent.
