There was drama on the Manx Electric Railway on Monday as one of the trams caught fire.

Phil Cripps, from Wiltshire, was on board, visiting the island with a group of 12 people from a Morgan’s sports car club.

Phil, who lived on the island from 2005 to 2008, told us: ’There were 12 of us on the number 22 tram travelling from Laxey with a German couple.

’It was coming down towards Ballaglass Glen and we were sat near the driver at the front when suddenly there were sparks and flames at the front of the tram and we came to a screaming stop.

’The driver was trying to put the fire out and my wife and I went to the back of the tram.

’It was an electrical fire in the driver cab. No one was hurt but it was a little scary. It took two fire extinguishers to put the fire out

’He had to disconnect the electrics so he could then put it out.

’We were then waiting three quarters of an hour as the driver had to roll the tram down to Cornaa station where everyone got on the number 23 coming from Ramsey.

’Oddly my friend was reading the history of the tram on board it before it all happened and it told the story of how the same tram caught fire in 1990.

’My friend said, "Watch out we’ll have another fire in a minute" and sure enough the fire started a few minutes later!’

’As we rolled down to Cornaa we jokingly wrote "Help" on the back window.’

A spokesman for the Department of Infrastructure said: ’Isle of Man Transport is conducting an inquiry into the incident that occurred on the Manx Electric Railway on Monday afternoon.

’The tram crew responded in accordance with their training and safety protocol to ensure the safety of the passengers and the tram.’
