After a four hour battle, involving 30 fire fighters, a blazing heathland has been brought under control.

The incident on Greeba Hill saw three major appliances, two Pinzgauer off road appliances, a water bowser, DEFA tractor with cutter, a total of 30 firefighters and three DEFA officers in attendance.

Approximately four acres of heathland was affected with crews trying to stop the fire spreading against light winds pushing the fire quickly down the hillside.

A fire service spokesman said:’Crews were in attendance for 4 hours working into the dark.

’A crew will remain on scene through the night dealing with hot spots and ensuring that the fire does not re-ignite.

’The ground remains incredibly dry the fire remains deep in the ground the terrain prevents access to hose in places.

’We would like to thank DEFA officers for their invaluable help. We again urge the public to be extra vigilant during this dry spell.’
