December’s fire safety column comes with season’s greetings and a safety message.

We want you all to have a safe and happy Christmas, and here are some important safety messages that can help you to do this.

Check your Christmas tree lights carry a British Safety Standard sign and never place candles near your Christmas tree or materials that can catch light easily.

Most fires start in the kitchen, so avoid leaving cooking unattended or cooking when under the influence of alcohol.

Make sure your family and any visitors you have staying over the festive period know how to escape in an emergency.

Make sure cigarettes are put out properly.

Decorations can burn easily - so don’t attach them to lights or heaters.

Keep candles, lighter and matches out of children’s reach. Burning candles should never be left unattended.

Never overload electrical sockets. Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before you go to bed.

Take care around open fireplaces as clothes may catch fire.

Take time to check on older relatives and neighbours this Christmas as they are at greater risk from fire.

Test your smoke alarm every week, remember test it Tuesday!
