The Fire and Rescue Service has issued out an appeal after a number of fires took place this weekend.

In a statement, the service has asked residents to be ’extra vigilant’ on the approach of the TT festival as small fires can spread quickly in dry conditions which can have a ’huge impact’ on emergency service resources.

Ramsey fire crews dealt with two separate fires over the weekend, both involving commercial properties.

After midday on Friday (May 18), two appliances were sent to deal with a small fire at an industrial unit in Jurby Industrial estate where the fire had spread from one unit to another unit’s compound setting stored fibre glass mouldings alight.

The fire was quickly extinguished using a hose reel.

On Saturday two appliances from Ramsey Station were sent to Andreas airfield after 11am to a report of a small rubbish fire.

Due to the nature of the materials caught on fire and the crew’s limited water supply, a third appliance was called in from Kirk Michael station.

It took two hours to put the fire out.

That same day, crews from Castletown station were called out to a fire in Ballawoods, Ballasalla. An off-road firefighting appliance from Port Erin with a fire fogging trailer was also called out due to the location of the fire.

They attended the scene for an hour.

After 11pm on Saturday, the Douglas service dealt with reports of smoke coming from a block of flats on Queen’s Promenade.

The building was evacuated while crews identified and isolated a faulty light fitting on one of the top floor corridors, which had cause the smoke.
