The fire service has warned people to take care when burning garden waste and disposing of barbecues.

On Tuesday night crews from Peel, Douglas, and Ramsey were sent to a number of small incidents.

A bin fire at Fenella Beach, Peel, was caused by the careless disposal of a single-use barbecue.

The bin was completely destroyed.

Two appliances from Douglas were sednt to a house in St Catherine’s Close, Douglas, to reports of a chip pan fire.

The fire was contained to a pan and was out on arrival, having been safely removed from the property by the occupiers. A fan was used to remove smoke from the property.

Then two appliances from Ramsey and the duty officer were sent to deal with a large fire near to Sulby Claddaghs.

The crew discovered an area of what appeared to be garden-type waste close to the river that was alight.

A fire service spokesman said: ’We’d like to urge people to take extra care during the current fine spell of weather. Always ensure barbecues are fully extinguished before disposing of them, as the coals can remain hot for some considerable time afterwards.

’If you are considering burning waste garden materials please ensure that this is not left unattended and have a garden hose at the ready. You should contact the Emergency Services Joint Control room on 697327 prior to carrying out any burns to provide contact information and avoid unnecessary call-outs.’
