Fireworks caused a large grass fire at Blue Point, near Smeale, last night (Saturday).

On arrival at the scene, fire crews from Ramsey and Kirk Michael were faced with a developing fire about 100 metres by 30 metres.

Two off-road vehicles were deployed to gain better access to the affected areas.

Fire station officer Matt Tyrer said: ’A well practised system of work was implemented to ensure water could travel long distances and be maintained throughout the incident.

’Crews used jets and beaters to extinguish the fire. Crews were in attendance for approximately two hours.’

He added: ’It was identified that fireworks were the cause of this fire.

’We would like to remind the public that under the Fireworks Act 2004 there are restrictions on the display of fireworks, and you may face prosecution if you discharge them outside the period surrounding Bonfire Night and the New Year without first notifying the Department of Home Affairs and the public.’
