The occupier of flat in central Douglas had to be treated for burnt hands after a pan of oil caught fire this morning (Thursday).

Fire crews were called to the incident at a flat above Samuel Webb’s bar shortly before 9am.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the smoke-logged property to find that the fire had been caused by a pan left unattended on a stove.

One person, who was out of the property before the crews’ arrival, had suffered burns to their hands as they attempted to remove the pan and received medical attention before being transferred to Noble’s Hospital for further treatment.

A second person was also treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

Crews stayed for around 40 minutes to ventilate the property.

The Fire and Rescue Service remind people that they should not to leave cooking unattended.

Should a fire occur on a hob, you should isolate the power if it is safe to do so and then leave the property immediately, closing the door to the fire behind you.
