A former clerk to Tynwald, Professor St John Bates, has denied new allegations against him.

On a court appearance in October, the 74-year-old, of Mona Street, Douglas, denied indecently assaulting a child, with a plea yet to be entered on a charge of committing gross indecency with or towards a person under 16 years.

On Tuesday, two further charges, two counts of possessing indecent images of children, were laid, which Mr Bates also denied. The new charges relate to nine computer images, rated at the lowest level on the Copine scale.

He was committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery to appear there on a date to be set. Permission was given for Mr Bates to leave the island over Christmas, to visit family in the UK, but he must report to a police station within two hours of his return.

Bail continues with conditions not to contact witnesses and to reside at his home address.
