A 32-year-old Anagh Coar man has admitted obstructing police and damaging a risk suit at police headquarters.

Kristopher Coward, of Tramman Park, was committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery for sentencing after magistrates declined jurisdiction.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court that police were called to an address at Meadow Close in Douglas on February 25 at 6.15pm after a report from a woman saying that Coward was refusing to leave.

He was heard shouting in the background during the police phone call and the woman said he had a knife.

Police arrived and found Coward sitting in the living room.

Officers handcuffed him because of the woman’s report of a knife. He then became aggressive, swearing and telling police: ’Get off me now’ and tensing up his arms.

He was said to have lunged his head at police and was restrained.

Coward then dropped his bodyweight to the floor as he was being taken out of the property and lashed out while on the ground.

He then took hold of one officer’s tactical vest and ripped items off it before being put in leg restraints.

At police headquarters he was put in a risk suit but ripped it causing £76 worth of damage.

The woman said she had met Coward that day and they had both been drinking.

She said he had made advances at her house which she rejected and he had then said he was getting a knife, threatening to harm himself.

Defence advocate David Reynolds said: ’This was not pre-planned. They had been out drinking. Mr Coward tells me he is not a heavy drinker.’

Mr Reynolds said that it had been the anniversary of a bereavement in Coward’s family and that he had been seeing the mental health team for 11 years.

The court heard that Coward is currently subject to a suspended sentence.

Magistrates committed Coward to the higher court where he will be sentenced on a date to be set. Bail continues.
