The head of an island high school has spoken of her ’shock and outrage’ after a video apparently showing a schoolgirl being physically bullied circulated on social media.

The disturbing video was posted online on Tuesday (February 5).

You can hear the teenage victim shout ’leave me alone’ before another female walks away.

Police confirmed that the juvenile female involved in the alleged assault and a second teenage girl that recorded it have been dealt with and will be prosecuted at court.

Adrienne Burnett, head teacher of Ballakermeen High School, in Douglas, issued a statement expressing her ’shock and outrage’ at the incident.

She wrote: ’Many of our students, parents and friends will have seen a very disturbing video on social media which shows one of our students being assaulted in two, separate out-of-school locations.

’Thanks to the many supportive members of our school community we were made aware of events very soon after they occurred and have taken immediate action.

Safeguarding

’Our safeguarding team will work to support the victim safely back to school.

’Our most important duty is to keep students safe while they are in our care, and while these attacks took place off-site, I have acted to ensure that children are protected at school, and we are working with the police and other agencies to that end.

’Every school has incidents of bullying, and at Ballakermeen we try to deal with them firmly and promptly.

’Physical attacks are mercifully rare, and I was both shocked and outraged to see the recordings of these assaults.’ Mrs Burnett added: ’I will ensure that we respond decisively to minimise the risk of future occurrences.’

A police spokesman said: ’The juvenile female that committed the assault and the juvenile female that recorded it have been dealt with and will be prosecuted at court.

’The victim will continue to receive support from the police, school and other agencies.’

A talk which addressed issues relating to drug and alcohol abuse among young people and the dangers of social media and child sexual exploitation was delivered by police constables Mike Griffiths and Paddy Moore at the high school yesterday (Wednesday).

The ’Keeping Your Child Safe’ event had been scheduled before the incident occurred.

As well as shining a spotlight on the issues, the session included practical tips and advice for parents and carers.
