Giving a friend a lift home from hospital has cost two men fines totalling £950.
Daniel Johnson got friend Adam James Kelly to drive his car to take him home but had not realised he wasn’t insured to drive it.
Johnson, who lives at Fairways Drive, Mount Murray, Santon, admitted an offence of permitting a driver to use a motor vehicle without insurance and was fined £300.
His licence was also endorsed with four penalty points.
guilty
Kelly, who lives at Harcroft Meadows, Mount Murray, pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and was fined £650 and given eight points.
Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court how, on May 12, a police patrol saw Kelly, who is 43, driving Johnson’s BMW on Jurby Road in Ramsey.
Checks found that he was not insured to drive the vehicle.
When questioned about it Johnson, whose age was not given in court, told police he was injured and couldn’t drive.
Defence advocate Peter Taylor, who represented Johnson, said: ’Mr Johnson was attending hospital for a day procedure so he asked his friend if he could drive the vehicle home for him.
’Unfortunately the necessary checks weren’t made.’
Mr Taylor said that Johnson had assumed Kelly was covered to drive his car.
Paul Glover represented Kelly and said: ’Mr Kelly was licensed and taxed. There was no collision or damage caused.
Both advocates submitted that the offence was at the bottom end of the scale for this type of offence.
Magistrates also ordered the duo to pay £50 prosecution costs each.
Johnson will pay at a rate of £200 per month while Kelly will pay £50 per month.
