A motorist who drove into the back of a car that was stuck behind a horse tram did not have a Manx licence.

Harry Holt, aged 70, of Avondale Road, Onchan, was driving his Renault Clio along Central Promenade and Queen’s Promenade, Douglas, on June 10.

Both his car and a BMW ahead of him were stuck behind a horse tram, travelling in the same direction.

But when the BMW stopped, Holt’s Clio went into the back of it.

After the accident, it was discovered that he had a UK driving licence and he had not exchanged it for a Manx one, even though he had lived in the island for 14 years. In addition, there was no valid taxation for the car in the Isle of Man.

Holt admitted charges of driving without due care and attention, not having a driving licence and not having a vehicle licence when he appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes.

David Reynolds, defending, said Holt had not realised he needed to exchange his UK licence for a Manx one.

His vehicle had been taxed in the UK but the car had been in the Isle of Man for about four months at the time of the accident.

Holt was fined a total of £500, with £50 costs.
