A man has been jailed for 10 weeks after brandishing a screwdriver and nail scissors at a hospital unit.

The incident happened at Manannan Court mental health facility, in the Noble’s Hospital grounds, on May 14.

Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood said Brian Michael Mark Gilmour, of Stevenson’s Court, Douglas, went to the facility intoxicated and became aggressive, swearing at staff after being told he would have to wait to be seen.

She said Gilmour, aged 38, told staff: ’You’re all useless.’ He pushed a computer damaging the monitor and then pulled out a screwdriver and threw a chair.

After being persuaded to put down the screwdriver, Gilmour then pulled out a pair of nail scissors but after a brief exchange, calmed down.

Arrested

Police arrived and Gilmour was arrested.

The court heard he is subject to a probation order imposed in August 2017 for an incident involving alcohol.

Defence advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court that Gilmour had first visited the hospital before going to Manannan Court.

She said: ’He does struggle with alcoholism, which he is receiving help for.

’He requested to see someone urgently and was told he would have to wait 20 to 40 minutes.

’He accepts he has acted out and was abusive. His state of mind was that he felt he had to see someone there and then.

’When he threw the chair he was the only person in that area.

’ It was a difficult time. He has been on a detox programme and does feel better.’

Gilmour admitted offences of behaviour likely to cause belief violence may be used and damaging property. A charge of possessing an offensive weapon was withdrawn.
