A dishwasher caused a fire in the kitchen of a home in Port St Mary.

Fire crews from Port Erin and Castletown were called out yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.

Station officer Roger Brown said: ’ On arrival crews were met by the property owner who confirmed that everyone was out of the building and that there had been a fire in a dishwasher located in the kitchen.’

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were sent into the heavily smoke-logged building.

The fire was confined to the integrated dishwasher and kitchen units and they put it out using a high pressure hose-reel.

The house was then ventilated using a high pressure ventilation fan.

Mr Brown said: ’Fires in built-in appliances can be difficult to extinguish due to the way they are fitted into the kitchen.

’We always advise people in the event of a fire in this type of unit to get everyone out of the building and call the fire service out and if safe to do so close any doors to contain the fire and smoke in that room.

’The occupant of this property did everything right helping to ensure that nobody was injured and helping to reduce the impact of the fire.’
