A 39-year-old landscape gardener has been fined £150 for being drunk and disorderly.

David Samuel Anderson admitted the offence and was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs by magistrates.

Prosecuting advocate Rachael Braidwood told the court how police were called to Main Road, Onchan, on August 8 at 10.55pm after a report of man abusing passersby.

When officers arrived they found Anderson sitting on a bench outside the library.

He was said to be smelling of alcohol and slurring his words.

When police spoke to him he became argumentative and started swearing.

Despite being given multiple warnings Anderson continued swearing and was eventually arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

The court heard that Anderson, who is self-employed and lives in Quine’s Close, Ballasalla, has a number of previous convictions.

Defence advocate Ian Kermode said: ’Mr Anderson had not been drinking in a pub. He had been socialising with a friend and accepts he drank too much. He only has a vague recollection.’

Mr Kermode asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea and said that this was his first conviction since December 2017.

’He has settled down a lot over the last three years,’ said the advocate.

Magistrates ordered Anderson to pay the fine and costs at a rate of £25 per week.
