The specialist piece of equipment needed to launch Peel RNLI’s new £2.2 million Shannon class lifeboat, the Frank and Brenda Winter arrived on Tuesday.

The boat itself, which has not yet seen service since its delivery last March, returned to Peel on Sunday having been stuck in Fleetwood since August because of Covid-19 restrictions.

It had been undergoing routine maintenance in the Lancashire port.

The Shannon Launch and Recovery System (SLARS), which arrived on the ferry this Tuesday, is a track-driven tractor and carriage which enables the lifeboat to be kept ashore but quickly launched when required.

Testing of the SLARS on the slipway, which has also undergone refurbishments to broaden it, will take place later this month.

The RNLI expects the lifeboat to finally go into active service some time after September.
