Peel RNLI volunteers were called into action twice in 24 hours this weekend.

The lifeboat was first called out on Saturday evening to rescue five people who were stuck on their 16ft boat returning from a day trip to Ardglass in County Down, Northern Ireland, when the boat when out of fuel.

Peel’s all-weather lifeboat Ruby Clery was launched at about 9.40pm, with conditions fair to assist the passengers who were found just four miles west of Peel.

Once they arrived, the lifeboat crew checked on the group, who were all described as ’safe and well’ before attaching a towline and bringing the stranded vessel into Peel harbour for about 11.50pm.

Peel RNLI was then launched for at 5.55pm on Sunday to assist a vessel which had expereinced engine failure one mile west of Knocksharry.

Travelling out in moderate conditions, the volunteers arrived within 20 minutes and again attached a tow line to bring the vessel back to Peel harbour.

Again, all on board were referred to as safe and well.

Peel RNLI Coxswain Frankie Horne said: ’As we approach the summer season we would like to remind everyone to respect the water and be mindful of the importance of preparing fully and checking that all equipment is in working order before taking to sea.

We would also remind water users to always wear a life jacket and always carry a means of calling for help. Should something go wrong dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.’
