Anthony Kevin Wiseman, aged 30, of Church Road Marina, Douglas, has been fined £150 after admitting a charge of possession of cannabis.

Prosecutor Barry Swain said police stopped car on Castle Mona Avenue on July 13 and were going to search the occupants.

Wiseman told officers he had a joint in his pocket and was arrested.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes was surprised to hear that Wiseman had been held in custody since 1pm the previous day when police have the power to issue conditional bail.

She asked: ’Was it really necessary for Mr Wiseman to be kept in custody for the sake of a joint?’

Mr Swain agreed it was not.

Wiseman was only found in possession of that one joint and no weight or value was recorded.

Mrs Hughes fined him £150 and ordered him to pay costs of £125 at a rate of £15 per week deducted from benefits.
