A Douglas man has admitted being drunk and disorderly and resisting arrest.

Matthew James Patrick Wilson, aged 21, of Finch Hill Grove, also pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis and will be sentenced on July 2 after a probation report has been prepared.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, on May 16 at 2.50am, police saw Wilson on Windsor Road in Douglas carrying a piece of piping, smashing it on the ground as he walked.

He was told to stop but made off before being detained.

Wilson was said to be slurring his words and unsteady on his feet and told police that he had cannabis on him.

A small lump of resin was handed over but Wilson then said he could not remember his address when asked by police.

He said it was just around the corner and offered to show officers.

However, as they arrived at his home address Wilson was said to have become abusive, swearing and saying: ’If you put me in a cell I will chew my arms up.’

He continued swearing at police until he had to be restrained against a wall.

Wilson then attempted to kick one officer which led to him being put on the ground.

He was arrested and when interviewed later said he did not have a good recollection of events.

Wilson told police he had been at a wake and had only consumed one double vodka and coke.

On a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the most drunk, Wilson rated himself at 1.5 when asked how drunk he was.

He claimed that he had fallen and banged his head before police came across him.

Wilson said he used cannabis to combat insomnia but added that he did not use it very often.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander asked for a probation report to be prepared before sentencing, saying that her client had self-referred to Motiv8 and mental health services.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes ordered that the probation report consider all options, including custody.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500.
