Police have arrested a 29-year-old man in relation to a fatal road traffic collision which resulted in the death of 21-year-old Luke McNicholas on Saturday.
Police said a man driving the vehicle involved in the incident was arrested in connection with road traffic offences at the scene.
He has been bailed pending the outcome of inquiries.
Inspector Neil Craig said: ’Mr McNicholas is known to have been riding his electric bicycle along the public cycle path in St John’s in a direction towards the Western Civic Amenity site, when he ultimately collided with a vehicle travelling on the Curragh Road around 3.20pm.
’A number of inquiries have been undertaken since the time of the collision, including statements having been obtained from key witnesses who were identified at the scene.
’However, I still wish to appeal to any person who was at or near the location at the time of the collision, to contact either Constable Stephen Hall, or myself, at police headquarters on 631212.
’I would also like to specifically appeal to anyone who may have dashcam or go-pro footage covering the areas of either the cycle path near to the Curragh Road, or the Curragh Road itself, between 3pm and 3.20pm on Saturday to come forward and speak to us as soon as possible.’
Police are requesting members of the public not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the incident so as to be respectful towards the family of Mr McNicholas.
Tributes to the 21-year-old former Ballakermeen High School student have been posted on social media, including from members of his family, who thanked people for their respects.
Amy McNicholas, Luke’s twin sister, posted: ’I was lucky enough to enter the world with my wonderful twin brother Luke. We’ve celebrated 21 birthdays together and my heart hurts so much to know I will never spend another birthday with you, or another Christmas.
’I always thought that everything in life happens for a reason but I couldn’t have been more wrong, there is no reason for you to be gone and there is no reason for me to be here without you.
’A Luke-shaped hole is now in my heart that will never be filled, I love you so much bro, Until we meet again.’ï¸
Joseph McNicholas, Luke’s brother, said: ’I’m completely overwhelmed with all the messages I’ve received about Luke. Can’t put it into words how much they mean to my family and I. Every single one of them puts a smile on my face. I’m so immensely proud of the profoundly positive impact he’s had on everyone around him.’
