A man who breached a court order by buying or attempting to buy alcohol has been fined by magistrates.

Ralph John Walker, 50, of Derby Road, Douglas, pleaded guilty to the three breaches and a charge of being drunk and disorderly.

Walker, who is subject to a licensing ban until September 2021, first broke his ban on April 18 when he bought two packs of dry cider at a shop in the south of the island at about 9.30am.

After he had left, the member of staff believed they recognised him so checked the ban book. The store’s designated official then rang the police.

Officers located him at 11.10am walking near the airport where he admitted purchasing the alcohol.

On April 25, he went into another shop and attempted to buy alcohol but was refused. After checking the book and CCTV, the shop’s owner informed the police.

At 11am on May 1, an officer saw him and said Walker was in ’good spirits’ but not drunk.

Then at 2pm, officers were called to Peel breakwater after reports of a drunk man swearing at a mother and her child. By the time officers arrived, Walker had left but the woman had photographed him and said he had walked towards the town.

Officers found him at a bus shop. They said he was ’argumentative’ and he initially refused to get into their van.

Advocate Jane Gray said Walker didn’t recall the incidents but upon seeing himself on CCTV admitted the offences.

She said that since sustaining serious injuries in an accident last year, her client has been on strong painkillers and she had concerns over his neurological condition.

Magistrates told Walker the incident in Peel was ’unpleasant’ particularly as a child was present.

They fined him £250 and ordered him to pay £150 costs.
