A man from Wales this week admitted trying to smuggle cocaine into the island on the first ferry after the borders opened.

Dewi Mitchell was arrested at the Sea Terminal as part of the police’s Operation Strongbox.

When officers searched the 22-year-old’s car they found cocaine valued at £160 hidden under the spare tyre in his Volkswagen Golf.

Mitchell told police he was concerned that the quality of drugs in the island would be less than in the United Kingdom and that the price would be higher so he had brought his own.

The search also found cannabis valued at £276.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court how Mitchell arrived on the Ben my Chree from Heysham on June 28.

He was travelling alone with the Volkswagen Golf and said to have no links to the island.

When police searched the car they found a Pringles tube in the boot containing Rizla cigarette rolling papers.

Mitchell, who lives in Frost Road, Ebbw Vale, said he believed these were unavailable in the Isle of Man.

After being arrested he was taken to police headquarters where a more thorough search of the car found a heat-sealed package under the spare tyre containing the cocaine and cannabis.

A box of condoms was also found with four condoms missing.

This resulted in Mitchell being searched but nothing was found.

In court he pleaded guilty to two counts of production (importation) of drugs to the island and two counts of possession.

Ms Carroon said that the case may be suitable for summary court but the production (importation) element may tip it towards the higher court.

Defence advocate Paul Glover said that his client intended to return to Wales as soon as possible so custody or a fine were the only realistic sentences.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes declined jurisdiction and committed Mitchell to the Court of General Gaol Delivery for sentencing.

He will appear there on Friday (July 9).

No bail application was made and he is remanded in custody.
