A man has been convicted of common assault after a row outside the Crosby pub.

Jason Craig Quayle, of Reayrt ny Chrink, Crosby, will be sentenced on August 29 after a probation report has been completed.

Quayle, aged 21, had previously pleaded not guilty to the assault charge but changed his plea to guilty when he appeared before magistrates on Thursday.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court that, on May 17, two men were leaving the Crosby pub about to get in their car when Quayle approached them.

He asked the men if he could borrow a mobile phone and offered to pay them £5 in return.

The men said that they were concerned about Quayle’s demeanour so they both refused to hand over their phone.

Quayle was said to have appeared agitated but walked off towards the main road.

As the two men drove out of the car park and onto the main road Quayle stepped out in front of them blocking their way.

Thud

They manouevred the car around him but they said that Quayle shouted and lashed out with them hearing a thudding noise.

The men said they got out and restrained Quayle who then butted one of them in the face.

Police arrived and arrested Quayle, but he told them: ’Why are you arresting me? I’ve not done anything. Look at my neck and look at his neck.’

When interviewed at police headquarters. Quayle told officers that he believed his request to borrow a mobile phone and offer to pay in return had been a reasonable one.

And Quayle said that he was ’just being an idiot’ when he stood in front of the car when the men were leaving.

He claimed that one of the men had got out and grabbed him by the throat and pinned him against a wall.

He told police that he had butted the man because he felt intimidated and he claimed to have acted in self-defence.

One witness at the scene was said to be an off-duty police officer.

Basis of plea

In court, Quayle entered a basis of plea again saying that he was pushed against a wall but admitting that the butt could not be described as self-defence.

The court heard that Quayle has previous convictions for resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes ordered that the probation report consider all options, including custody.

Bail was granted with conditions to contact probation, reside at his home address, and not leave the island without court permission.
