A Douglas man has been fined £600 after admitting disorderly behaviour at a nightclub on Loch promenade.

Samuel Drover Smith, aged 29, of St Ninian’s Road, was involved in a fight with another man in Bordello on April 26.

Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood this week told the High Bailiff that staff reported seeing Smith strike the man, who was said to be bleeding.

After being arrested Smith told police there had been a ’bit of a scuffle’ after a verbal argument. He said that he could not recall hitting the man.

The court heard that Smith has previous convictions for assault and provoking behaviour but no offences since 2013.

He entered a basis of plea saying that the man had become threatening towards him and he admitted slapping him.

He accepted it was not self-defence but said that there was a level of provocation.

He also admitted ’tussling’ with a bouncer but said that he had not knowingly shoved her away. Smith said that he had been allowed to say in the bar after the incident and had only left when police arrived to speak to him.

Advocate Stephen Wood said: ’Regrettably something was said to my client and he responded poorly but there was an element of provocation.

’It was effectively over as soon as it began, a brief argument.’

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes ordered Smith to pay the fine and prosecution costs of £125 by June 11 or face 42 days in prison.
