A man has been fined and ordered to pay compensation after he smashed a window at the Union pub in Castletown.

Joseph Neil Devereau, of Lewthwaites Way, Port St Mary, admitted an offence of criminal damage and was fined £200 and ordered to pay £250 compensation to the pub.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also banned Devereau, aged 20, from entering licensed premises, and purchasing or being sold alcohol for three months.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court that on May 4 at 10pm, Devereau had arrived at the Union with friends and his girlfriend.

Just after midnight he was seen dropping a glass which smashed as he was going outside for a cigarette.

The landlord asked him to leave, which he did but then returned after 15 minutes.

He was asked to leave again and eventually did but was then seen outside at 12.35am.

A witness said she heard glass breaking and turned to see Devereau shaking his hand as if he was in pain.

He then started laughing and swore, saying: ’I’ve just broken the window.’

The woman rang the police and as she was on the phone Devereau shouted: ’Tell them I’m Joe.’

Police arrived and Devereau admitted breaking the rear window of the pub.

He was taken to police headquarters where he told police he had hit the window causing it to break.

Defence advocate Peter Taylor said: ’There is very little to add. Mr Devereau admits he was intoxicated. He admits he slapped the window.

’He thought it was double-glazed and it would withstand it.

’He didn’t run away, he remained in the vicinity and police arrested him. He has offered to pay the landlord but of course this will now be done through the court process.’
