A man who made several 999 calls from a phone box has been fined for being drunk and disorderly.

Prosecutor Hazel Carroon told the court how, at 2.40am on January 19, police received numerous dropped 999 calls from the area of York Road in Douglas.

When officers arrived they found Richard Alan Kewley, of Tynwald Road, Douglas, in a phone box.

He was said to be unsteady on his feet, slurring his words, and had glazed eyes.

He denied making the 999 calls at first and said he had been trying to call the Crisis Referral Team as he wanted to harm himself.

Police stayed with him and asked him to go to the hospital but he began swearing at them, saying: ’It’s your fault I’m like this anyway.’

He was arrested and later apologised for his behaviour.

Kewley, aged 58, declined the use of an advocate in court, representing himself and said that he accepted the prosecution case as presented.

He was fined £150 and ordered to pay £125 costs.
