A man caused a drunken disturbance at Noble’s Hospital’s A&E department, court heard this week.
Kieran Cain, of Empire Terrace, Douglas, had to be restrained after kicking hospital doors.
The 20-year-old tried to get into a room which his mother was in and was said to be shouting abuse at her.
Cain was fined £500 for being drunk and disorderly at Noble’s Hospital on January 31.
He was also ordered to pay an additional £200 fine which replaced a 12 month conditional discharge which he is currently subject to.
Prosecutor Hazel Carroon told the court that, at 12.10am, Cain was said to be causing a disturbance at A&E.
He was said to be smelling of alcohol and unsteady on his feet and police escorted him out of the building.
But he continued swearing until he was subsequently arrested.
Defence advocate Kate Alexander said that this was her client’s fifth alcohol-related offence in 18 months.
’It would appear he does have a problem with alcohol,’ said the advocate.
’He is subject to an alcohol ban but it appears someone else has purchased alcohol for him. He realises they are not doing him any favours.’
Ms Alexander went on to say that Cain had self-referred to Motiv8, the alcohol advisory service.
’He has no explanation for how he came to be in the condition he was in,’ she said.
’Or why he was at the hospital or why he said what he did to his mother.’
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Cain: ’You have a problem with alcohol.
’Your behaviour was disgusting, not only towards your mother but also towards staff attempting to treat her and others.
’You need to address your alcohol problem and do something about it very quickly. You need to be very careful, you are looking at custody if you don’t do something.’
Cain will pay his fines at a rate of £20 per fortnight.
He was also ordered to pay a £50 outstanding fine forthwith or face seven days’ custody in default.
