A Peel man has been fined £350 for cannabis possession after being stopped while driving.

Bill Shay Hesketh, aged 22, of Mourne View, had previously admitted the offence but the case was adjourned while he was sentenced for other drug matters at the Court of General Gaol Delivery.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, on March 10 at 2.25am, police stopped Hesketh driving on Loch Promenade after following him for a while.

He told police officers: ’I’ve taken a route trying to avoid you. I know I have a headlight out.’

He was asked if he had any drugs and produced a grinder and cannabis, said to be worth around £20.

Co-operation

The court heard that this offence was committed while Hesketh was on bail for the Court of General Gaol matters for which he received a 240-hour community service sentence as a direct alternative to nine months’ custody on September 19.

Defence advocate Paul Glover asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea, co-operation with police and the small amount of the drug to be taken into account.

The advocate said: ’Mr Hesketh has now stopped using cannabis. He has well and truly had his fingers burnt.’

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered him to pay £50 prosecution costs.
