Callum Matthew Kinrade, of Lheaney Grove, admitted common assault and was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to his victim.
Magistrates ordered him to do 80 hours’ unpaid work and put him on probation for 12 months.
Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court that the victim was in the Courthouse at 1.30am on April 28.
He said he was approached by Kinrade who punched him in the face in what he said was an unprovoked attack.
The blow struck him on the right cheek and temple and caused bleeding from his mouth.
Kinrade was arrested and told police during interview that the victim was his girlfriend’s ex-partner. He said his girlfriend was crying because the man was staring at her and making comments.
Kinrade admitted he went looking for him and punched him.
A probation report said Kinrade was a groundworker who was due to become a father in the next week.
Kinrade told probation that he had been very concerned about the outcome of the case and that next time he would walk away if such an incident occurred.
His last conviction was in March 2018 for affray when he was jailed for 10 weeks.
Kinrade told probation his girlfriend’s ex had treated her badly in the past.
Defence advocate Deborah Myerscough said her client had a good future in front of him and would benefit from community service and working with probation.
Magistrates chair Gill Eaton told Kinrade: ’You can’t go round the nightclubs of Douglas punching people in the face, no matter what the history.’
