A pedestrian suffered bruising and a cut to his head after being hit by a car on Douglas promenade.

The man was thrown into the air before landing on his back in the incident, which happened at the Victoria Road junction with Loch promenade on March 19 at just after 11.20am.

The motorist, Leanne Corlett, of Cronk y Berry, Douglas, was ordered to pay £635 in compensation to the man when she appeared before magistrates last week.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon said Corlett pulled out of the junction after another vehicle had signalled to let her out.

Corlett, who admitted driving without due care, said she had not seen the man and that she didn’t think she was driving at more than 10mph at the time.

CCTV footage showed Corlett pull out and accelerate before hitting the man.

The man said he had stepped off the pavement and taken two or three steps before being hit.

Advocate Jim Travers handed in character references for this client and asked for credit to be given for her guilty plea, submitted at the pre-trial review stage.

’Ms Corlett has formed a realistic view,’ said the advocate.

’Despite whatever actions were taken by the gentleman it was her responsibility to avoid him.

’This was driving without due care by way of failure to react. The circumstances were not caused by her. She was placed in a predicament where she ought to have reacted quicker.’

He said Corlett had immediately stopped and tended to the man.

Corlett was fined £100 and her licence was endorsed with four points. She must pay £300 costs.

She was spared a driving ban, despite already having eight points on her licence, after arguing it would cause her exceptional hardship.
