A 24-year-old man has been jailed for eight months for a string of offences.
Liam Luke Kaighin, of Marathon Road, Douglas, admitted possessing heroin, assaulting a police officer with intent to resist arrest, threatening behaviour, possessing cocaine, damaging property, and possessing cannabis.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced him to six months in custody for those offences but they also put him in breach of a community service order and a probation order.
Mrs Hughes added a month to replace each of those orders bringing Kaighin’s total sentence to eight months.
Regarding the latest offences, Kaighin admitted possessing heroin at the Sefton Express Hotel on April 28 last year, assaulting a police officer with intent to resist arrest and damaging a police cell on December 26, threatening behaviour at Noble’s Hospital on June 28, and possessing cocaine and cannabis at Noble’s Hospital on June 5.
Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that those offences put Kaighin in breach of a probation order imposed in January 2020 after he threatened to slit the throat of a man at Tromode House.
The community service order was imposed in October 2019 after Kaighin punched a member of the public then spat in the face of a police officer.
Defence advocate Paul Glover, speaking about the latest offences, said that the heroin, cocaine and cannabis were all relatively small amounts for personal use and the offences were committed around seven months ago.
Mr Glover said that some of the latest offences had been committed while Kaighin was being arrested for other matters which had not been pursued so he had felt aggrieved.
The advocate admitted that there was no alternative to custody and said that his client was ’entirely realistic’ about that.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Kaighin: ’You have a history of assaulting and resisting police officers involving spitting.’
Mrs Hughes also banned Kaighin from entering licensed premises and buying or being sold alcohol for six months.
