A Douglas man has been jailed for four weeks after failing to complete a community service order.

Stephen Michael Glover, aged 35, of Anagh Coar Road, was said to have done just 47 hours out of a community service order for 100 hours in the 12 months that he was given to complete it. Glover was sentenced to community service in May 2017 after he admitted a string driving offences: driving whilst impaired through drink or drugs, driving without due care, failing to produce insurance, and having a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how Glover had failed to attend scheduled community service work groups on six occasions.

Telling how the original offence occurred, Mr Swain said that police had been called to an accident in October 2016 at Falkland Drive in Onchan.

Glover had crashed his Mazda into a car there and told police it was due to him sneezing and losing control of his vehicle.

A roadside breathalyser test proved negative but a subsequent blood test showed evidence of cocaine and diazepam use.

Glover admitted using cocaine in the days prior to the accident and said he also took prescription diazepam, sometimes using more than he should.

Inquiries also revealed he had passed his driving test in July 2015 but had failed to apply for his full licence which also invalidated his insurance.

In reference to the failure to complete the community service defence advocate Rebecca Cubbon said: ’Mr Glover accepts there wasn’t a reasonable excuse.

’He struggles with social interactions and finds it quite stressful integrating with new people.

’He describes himself as someone who buries his head in the sand when it all gets too much.’

Glover was sentenced to four weeks’ jail for the driving whilst impaired offence with no separate penalty for the other offences.

The community service order was revoked.
