A 50-year-old man who was arrested after becoming abusive on a bus has been fined £200.

Ralph John Walker shouted derogatory terms about Port St Mary and the police as his bus drove through the village.

He admitted being drunk and disorderly and was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs by magistrates.

Prosecuting advocate Rachael Braidwood told the court how police were called to the bus on August 22 at 4.45pm.

It was outside Port St Mary school and had stopped due to Walker’s abusive behaviour and him refusing to get off.

The driver said that Walker was highly intoxicated and was shouting: ’F*** Port St Mary,’ as the bus drove through the area.

The driver asked him to stop swearing but he continued to mumble abuse and after being warned that the police would be called, said: ’F*** the police.’

Walker, of Derby Road, Douglas, was said to be in possession of alcohol at the time of his arrest.

The court heard that he has a number of previous alcohol-related offences and was arrested on a warrant after failing to turn up for court last week.

Defence advocate Stephen Wood said: ’Mr Walker instructs me that, in the days leading up to the offence he had been assaulted and prescribed medication for a head injury. He has scant recollection of what occurred. But he accepts in future it would do him well to read the small print that comes with medication, and usually says do not mix with alcohol.’

Mr Wood went on to say that the offence was ’perhaps not the most serious drunk and disorderly’, and that Walker had been mumbling swear words and making exclamations in a random way rather than directly at anyone.

The court heard that Walker is already paying fines at a rate of £20 per week, deducted from his benefits and magistrates ordered that his latest fine and costs be paid at the same rate, once the previous fines are paid.

Walker was also ordered to pay £100 in relation to his bail for failing to turn up for court.
