A man has been sentenced to community service after a fight in the streets of Ramsey.

Samuel Paul Crowe, aged 39, of Gladstone Avenue, Ramsey, admitted affray and was ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work by magistrates.

The other man involved in the fight, who had also admitted the same offence, Paul Mark Grant, aged 36, of Hope Street, Douglas, was sentenced to the same number of community service hours on November 27.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court how, on the evening of September 22, Grant was involved in a verbal argument with Crowe outside Bar Logo.

Grant was said to have been the more aggressive of the two men.

The court heard that he put down his drink and coat and ran up to Crowe causing the two of them to end up rolling on the ground.

They were separated by members of the public and Crowe walked off.

Grappled

However, Grant was said to have approached him again and grappled with him outside the Co-op.

Grant later wrote a letter to the court, in which he stated that the row had been caused by him and that Crowe would not be in court had it not been for him.

Grant said that while he was in Bar Logo he had argued with his ex girlfriend which had resulted in him downing four shots which may have contributed to his behaviour.

Defending Crowe in court advocate David Clegg said: ’It was a case of self defence gone too far.

’Mr Grant produced a letter of apology saying Mr Crowe wouldn’t be here but for him.

’Mr Crowe made attempts to get away after being attacked twice.’

Magistrates also ordered Crowe to pay £125 prosecution costs.
