A 61-year-old man who strangled and punched his girlfriend in an assault at a hotel has been sentenced.
Nicholas Stephen Brough, of Mooragh Promenade, Ramsey, admitted common assault and was put on probation and ordered to pay his victim £300 compensation.
High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Brough: ’You need to think long and hard about your personal relationships.
Mrs Hughes said that she was imposing the probation order given Brough’s lack of previous convictions and the fact that any custodial sentence would be short and would not address his offending.
She said that probation would help with preventing future offending.
As part of the order, Brough must inform probation of any relationships he enters into.
The couple then went to the Ellan Vannin Hotel where the woman was staying.
Once in her room, the pair started arguing again and Brough was said to have climbed on top of the woman and put his hands around her neck.
He started to strangle her until she kicked him causing him to fall backwards.
But Brough continued his attack by punching the woman twice in the face.
The woman said she feared for her life so she told Brough she needed to use the bathroom but instead escaped and left the room.
She got another patron in the hotel to call the police but by the time they arrived Brough had left.
Brough drove to Jurby airfield but was located by police and arrested.
A probation report recommended a probation order and referred to Brough saying that he was ’mortified’ by his behaviour.
He was said to have been referred to the Community Mental Health team.
Defence advocate James Peterson limited his mitigation saying that his client would have no issue with attending probation after High Bailiff Jayne Hughes indicated that this was likely to be the sentence.
Brough was also banned from entering licensed premises, and purchasing or being sold alcohol for 12 months.
